It looked like nothing more than new coolant packs for the Thermonuclear generators. In reality they were energy-dispersing genetic modifiers, specifically created to forcefully-- and instantly-- evolve all humans to equal the playing field between all. If they could not stop the evolved, then they would join them. This was Toltec’s great contribution. This was their Gift to humanity.

It backfired horrifically.

Half of the entire human population was killed in the instant of disbursement. 1/4th became little more than super powered monsters of myth. Only the remaining 1/4th of the human population had the desired results. The rest of the Evolved were left genetically unaffected, but still in the vast minority. Blame was placed on them and as the populations of the world suddenly and violently revolted, the earth fell into ruin.

2038: War had ravaged western civilization, as had the failing thermonuclear generators. The oceans shrank, the climates shifted, wildlife was either virtually decimated or genetically altered to a degree of monstrosity. Cities that had once been prosperous fell into nothing more than ghost towns afflicted by nuclear decay. Only one known city remained-- the city that had been protected by the now publicly withdrawn Toltec.

2118: Current time. The world as we know it is long gone. Internet, cellphones, fast food…they're nothing more than an old timer's tale. Toltec rules Rio de Janeiro with an iron fist, forcing human children to take their ‘Gift’ in order to receive their place in society. The Evolved have been reduced to criminals and to ruin-- or worse- Utilized by the city in tasks suiting to their power sets. The Gifted are controlled through water supplies and distributed suppressants-- all against their knowledge. The Cursed—Evolved who were mutated beyond humanity by the Gift-- live below ground in the remains of the metro rail system, forsaking the known world and clinging onto life and control in the only ways they know how.

And outside the city Rebellion grows. The truth has been hidden for a very long time. Toltec’s oppressive rule only makes the Rebellion stronger and banding together in secret Councils outside of Rio’s jurisdiction they begin to plot for a different kind of future. Toltec is considered the cancer and the notion of purging them is widely accepted. Unfortunately Toltec has all of the power, all of the technology and wealth, and a host of scientific wonders at their disposal. Armed with Gifted telepaths and powerfully talented Utilized Evolved they are virtually unstoppable. This is why the majority of the people are bent to their will.

The Believers still exist today. The Mayans were keepers of an eternal calendar.

And the world is about to enter a new season.
